Low Fantasy Gaming -Temptress of the Haunted Path (Part 13)

 SESSION SET UP. 

As with the last session I am using the '8 steps to game prep' from Return of the Lazy

Dungeon Master by Mike Shae of Sly Flourish fame.  I have found this really helps me get organised, focused and ready to play my solo games.

 

 WEATHER  

Getting warmer, the rain has stopped but now it is humid.

 

Review the characters

Canaid the Bard (click here for stats)

At the end of the previous side quest (part 12) Canaid found in a magic greatsword in the Fey tunnel.   Made of cold iron the sword has a large red and grey feather in the hilt which Canaid cannot remove.  She has also gained 37 gold.
Pedler Glatz the Rogue (click here for stats)

Pedlar now has a young Rogue ally.  Pedlar does not know it yet but Decimus is an excellent assassin.  Pedlar has gained 38gold
Nydia Fernwise the Magic User (click here for stats)

Nydia had a quiet time in the side quest, she has an additional 38 gold
Wren the Ranger (click here for stats)

Wren took 4 hits in a combat encounter with a skeleton.  She is now down to 6hp.

She has gained 38gold

 

Create a strong start

Market day in Woodbury, lots of locals both trading and buying.  Arna (the young Komtess of Writa) and Batana (her maid) have left Woodbury alone and are heading for a ruined city somewhere north of the village.

Asking the stall holders at the market to see if they have sold anything to the Komtess, they come across one stall run by an elderly merchant Castin who has a single glass orb on his table stall. Many potential customers inquire about the item, but are quickly turned away. If the characters inquire, Castin says “The orb is not for sale, but it is time for me to part with it. The real question is, are you the ones the orb waits for?”

 

Outline potential scenes

Check at the lakeside to see if Arna has tried to hire a boat.

Check with stall holders at the market to see if Arna has tried to purchase any goods.

Journey through the Golden Coppices.

Journey along the shore of the Lough of Doom.

Attempt to find a way over to the other side of the Lough.

 

Define secrets and clues

Which family member is involved in the adventure?

 

Develop fantastic locations

Giant Stone monument or sculpture of ancient origin (Black ghosts, demon spirits, haunt this place)

Arna, the young Komtess of Writa

Batana, loyal maid to the Komtess, level 0, 4hp, very handy with a crossbow.

Ulfina, made ward of the young Komtess following the execution of the girls' parents.

 

Cataline, Arna's Maiden Aunt and a Sorceress, is believed by Ulfina to be trying to stop or even kill Arna so that both Carnifex the Shadow Knight and herself can seize control of Writa.

Magic User.  Level 6.  HP 24. AC12

Int: 15. Dex: 13, Others: 10.  Luck 8

Level 1 - Withering Fog, Speaker of all Tongues, Non Shall Pass, Ward of Lost Souls.

Level 2 - A wisp Unseen, Bound by Black Spiral, Globe of silent contemplation.

Decimus, a young thief (assassin), found living by his wits, sleeping in a long abandoned Fey dungeon,  he has become an ally of the group, keeping very close to Pedlar Glanz who he sees as his Friend.

2 x Daggers 1d4+1 (kept concealed).

Choose relevant monsters

2d8 skeletons HP 2 each, AC 11 Attack, Spear 1d6+1

S 13, D 13, C10, P 13(Special) Luck 4

2d4 Shade HP 4d8 (12hp) AC 12 Attack Touch 1d6+1 + Str drain.

Nat 19: the target’s weapon or armour (50%) is

transformed into shadow ( Luck save resists).

Move: 40 ft

Shades are Incorporeal Undead with the usual

benefits. Shades resemble misty, ink dark

shadows, existing only to steal the vitality from the

living to sustain their cursed half life. Their chill

touch drains 1 Str with a successful hit. An

adventurer reduced to zero Str is instantly slain

and has a 50% chance of being reborn a shade

(subservient to its creator) the next midnight.

 

Select magic item rewards

Orb of answers.

If the owner of the orb asks the orb a question the orb will show the owner the answer.

The Orb will only answer to one person and only answer three questions after which it will seek a new owner.
Each time a question is asked of the orb, the owners luck is reduced by 1 point and the caster rolls d20 to check for dark and dangerous magic effects.

I think that should be enough to get me going in what will be the penultimate part of this quest.  I will type up what happened during the actual game play in the next blog post but until then
