2022 Character Creation Challenge Day 17 - Nydia Fernwise the Magic User for Low Fantasy Gaming RPG

Sticking with Low Fantasy Gaming characters for the today, (as well as the next few days), and I have already rolled up some attributes, with a score for Intelligence of 14 I am going to make this character a  magic user.

The Charisma roll is at the lower end of average with a score of 9, and that has given me this image of a young witchy girl, quiet to a point of being silent, unobtrusive and inconspicuous, not unlikable but perhaps a little hard to get to know, I will say more in the Backstory at the end of the character sheet, so lets get this character typed up

Backstory

Nydia was born and still lives in the fishing village of Larkton to a fisherman and his wife who made a living fishing the waters around the cove which are rich with an abundance of fish and seafood.

From an early age Nydias parents noticed their daughter was different from the other children, even her own siblings, quiet, and introspective, preferring mostly her own company or that of the old widow whom Nydia would happily help with keeping her house and other chores in return the old woman taught Nydia to read from one of the many old books she had in her home.

It was this kind old woman who first sensed that Nydia had the rare potential to cast magic, amongst the old books in her house was a book of spells which she kept from Nydia, knowing that magic was both frowned upon and dangerous to the caster.

But they say a spell book finds its owner and after the old woman passed away, the books went to Nydia where she came across the spell book and began to learn what she could from the it.  Nydia soon discovered her skill and talent in the art of magic, realising both the power and the danger that she now possessed she kept it secret from her family.

Nydia comes across as shy, speaking very little, she is unobtrusive and keeps very much in the background, this makes her difficult to get to know and not easy to get along with, making her a soft target for the bullies and thugs in her village, yet she misses very little of what goes on around her and can easily hold her own in combat, so far she has hidden her talent for magic but fears that if pushed too far by her village peers she may use it to both their and her detriment.

It was in the Red Lark Tavern in Larkton that she came into contact with and got talking to a small group of young adventures,  that is when they she bravely decided to band together and go off into the hinterland with them to explore and find adventure and leave Larkton and her family.

  1. Another very interesting addition to your stable of LFG characters! I like how Magic Users can wield short swords, etc in this game, "making up" for not tossing around lightning bolts willy-nilly :)

    1. Thanks Max. Right from the early days when I first picked up D&D, I always struggled with magic users, they were next to useless at very low levels, no weapons except daggers, no armor and just a spell or two, yet by level 6 they had enough magic to take on a small army and by level 12 destroy worlds. The way the magic users are in LFG works much better for me personally and I prefer games where magic is not going to unbalance the whole thing. That said, I've not played a game of LFG yet, so we shall see how it works.
